With abundant bunkers, intimidating water hazards and tight fairways, Innisbrook's recently renovated and lengthened Island course is considered by many to be no less demanding than the Copperhead. The Island has played host to numerous U.S. Open qualifiers, NCAA Championships and has been ranked among the country's top 50 resort courses by Golf Digest and No. 14 in Travel & Leisure Golf's "Fifty Finest in Florida."

The Island's first six holes are bordered by Lake Innisbrook and lateral water hazards that require pinpoint accuracy on tee shots and approaches. The middle six holes feature rolling hills dominated by cypress and pine trees. The final third of this course boasts a mixture of holes designed to reward the bold and penalize the errant golf shot. Your round will end at a finishing hole that's withstood the test of the world's most skilled players and is one of the most photographed in Florida.

Extremely OVERPRICED for Course Conditions

My group and I found the course extremely overpriced with golf pros that do not care about their customers experience. The course and green conditions were atrocious for such an expensive round, and the staff while present, was almost non existent. Finally, when I reached out to the head pro about my concern privately over email I was given the cold should with no response. I play a lot of courses in the Rocky Mountains and have been a member at one for a number of years that have much better conditions and are half the cost of Innisbrook. The grass on the fairways was stringy and the greens were very slow and patchy, not to mention non of the sand traps had a defined edge and were littered with debris. This is unacceptable for a course with such expensive green fees. When we returned and complained we were told the course had cut back on their maintenance recently, but had not lowered their greens fees. This was very disappointing, but expect from the cart staff as they encouraged us to leave a complaint. Unfortunately our concerns were not answered making feel that I needed to leave this review. Very disappointing round on a vacation centered around playing golf. HUGE LET DOWN

I absolutely agree, I played it a week ago. BIG disappointment. the winter Florida excuse doesn't work as their are a lot of lesser known and lower priced courses that are in far better shape.

Sounds like u1139375 is upset that you ripped his course. It looks like most of the reviews are bad once COVID happened. So I believe the reviews and will not play there until the reviews return to the way they were pre-pandemic.

Upsettingly disappointed

I had very high expectations for The Island course at Innisbrook. Upon arriving on this massive resort property I was a little worried to see the dead and browning grass but figured it would all get better. The range we used was very bad. Hitting off of uneven mats with nothing but patchy grass and sand in front of us. The putting green was large and nice. Once we teed of I was immediately met with mediocre conditions. The fairways were okay but brown in spots and bare in some places not to far off of the fairway. The sand traps left a lot to be desired, not horrific but unkept edges and thing sand. The greens rolled pretty well but nowhere near as fast as I was expecting. I was on the border of giving this course a 3 star due to very average to below average conditions (for the price) but I cannot day enough good things about the layout. Although it’s incredibly tight on some holes (6) there were many drastic elevation changes that made for an extremely interesting round of golf. I cannot State enough the delightful routing but really wish the course was kept up to the conditions I would have expected for the price.

P.s. the real kicker is after finishing our round we wanted to play 9 more (4 PM) and were told that it would be an additional $80 to play 9 more holes. Unheard of and not even close to worth it. It’s a fun track but for the price there is much better golf to be played in the area.

A struggle

The front 9 has more water on it and kicks you in the teeth for the first bit. Greens were in great shape and were slick. Subtle breaks make for a challenge.

Back 9 is easier. Apples in cooler on 10 to up your carb intake. 18 hole is tricky. Pin was in the front right. Had to be below the hole to get out. 3 footers that went past rolled off the green.

Couldn't keep my balls from going "INNISBROOK"

Picture perfect day and golfing conditions. Quickly turning into water and sand all around me. Stay on the fairways! Easier said than done. Surviving the front nine was a victory in itself.
Making the turn where the glory is short lived due the snails pace and 4 group wait on the next hole. "this isn't the Villages and you're not driving your own custom carts"!
With that being said, the staff was friendly and entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyed the super friendly "MeerGooseSquirrel" creature.
In my opinion the course is a bit overpriced, by more than 50%. But otherwise a great experience and Challenging course.
Would love to play it again. Someone invite me, please! lol

11. That's how many balls went in the water. Am I upset? Absolutely. Why? Because I want redemption. The Island Course, as the legend goes, was supposed to be the Professional course, not Copperhead. But when the TV networks showed up they realized something. There is nowhere to put anything. Towers or stands. The course is tight, has lots of water hazard and tree/shrub area. After you go in the trees on hole #4, you start praying for water. The roots stick out of the ground like knobs. Almost impossible to get a good swing on a ball if you go in these kinds of areas on the course.
As with all the Innisbrook courses, stay on site because that is how you get the best rate to play. In addition, the resort is beautiful and children friendly.

Innisbrook's toughest test?

The Copperhead Course may be the PGA Tour host, but it might just be the case that the Island Course is the resort's toughest layout. Narrow fairways, plenty of length and a healthy amount of water all conspire against the golfer, with the uphill, par-4 10th being the resort's toughest single hole not just for its sheer length, but an incredibly scary pitched back-to-front green. If you can play to your handicap here, you can do it anywhere.

Over Rated

I'm part of a group of 8 guys who come to Tampa to play a week of golf each fall. We've always included the Copperhead course in our list. This year, at the urging of others, we added the Island Course.

We had been told by many people that the Island Course is every bit as nice and challenging as the Copperhead course. The starter talked the course up big time. Challenging it is!

The course itself is not easy. It's playable and fair. One or two holes are a bit tricked up, but overall, the course had good flow. The routing was nice. That's where the comparison to Copperhead ends.

Innisbrook charges a premium to play the Island Course. Quite a bit more than area courses. To a man, we were disappointed in the condition of the Island Course. The tees were average, the bunkers were not raked at all and the sand was rock hard, the fairways were brown. The greens had good grass coverage and good speed. Needless to say, we were disappointed that such an expensive course was in his condition.

We played Copperhead the next day. Copperhead was great in every way. The conditions were perfect.

If you're going to play one premium course, make it Copperhead. It may not be as difficult as the Island Course but the conditions are much better.

island

Wow...pretty much sums up my experience on island. had played copperhead the day before and kinda knew what to expect after watching the valspar all these years on tv. went into island a lil blind...but boy what an amazing track. good elevation changes, good variety of holes..i actually thought island was more difficult than copperhead. def must play if you are staying at innisbrook. Greens were superb..less grain and more speed than copperhead the day we played

Conditions

Of all the accolarions I was told about greatness of this courses, I was mostly disappointed by the conditions of most or all of their fairways. They are spotty brown and super dried. Not many players fixed their divots. Greens are fine. It was a hot and humid day when we played yesterday but was also surprised that they dotnt have ice machines on the courses. Unless you stocked your knee in the first hole, you are in tough luck. Good things that they have a die hard beverage cart gal on the course. This course is not worth the $175 rate.

At Innisbrook, Island is 1b to Copperhead's 1a

Of the four courses at Innisbrook, the Copperhead is certainly the most well known of the bunch, thanks to the fact it's a long-standing host of the PGA Tour. But the Island is every bit as challenging, and is home to some of the neatest holes and greatest elevation change on the property. I love the par-5 7th, which is a severe dogleg left off the tee and then trudges uphill to the green. The par-5 11th has a great elevated tee shot, while there are some other holes that are more narrow, like the 6th, and requires nothing but your finest (and straightest) drive. It would be silly to only play the Copperhead during your stay at Innisbrook; be sure to play the Island as well. I had the chance to play the course first-off on a warm September morning, which really added to the appeal of the round. Try and do the same.

Slow play

Overall, golf course was in fair shape for our summer climate and the volume of rounds they get. However pace of play was horrendous and the staff made no effort in trying to speed up play. For a famous resort course I expected a better course and staff experience.

Had about as much bite as Copperhead

If they grew the rough on the Island Course, it might be even more difficult than the course that the PGA Tour plays on -- Copperhead. It's certainly tighter, and if you played at more than 7,300 yards, it'd be a pretty incredible challenge. I didn't tackle it from there, but it was plenty difficult from 6,700 yards. Water everywhere, plenty of bunkers and pretty tight fairways means you need to be on your game. Plus some of these holes, like the par-4 10th that plays back uphill, play pretty long.

Extremely Difficult and very tight!

Island course at innisbrook is definitely a well-kept course but it definitely takes second place to the PGA tour stop and sister course, Copperhead. This course is extremely tight and can play quite difficult. Some might use the term "unfair" but straight shots are rewarded here and if you are not in the fairway, you most likely will be in trouble and probably have to punch-out or take a drop. I would have preferred to see some of the trees and overhanging limbs cleared out a bit to give the average golf a bit more forgiveness but Island is a course where hitting it straight and long is a MUST. This course is not for the play-once-a-year golfer but if you like challenges, this is a great course to test out your game. But be warned, this course will make you swallow your pride!

Must Play Golf Course

The course is a great layout. As good as Copperhead but surprisingly more difficult. The rough is deep and water is in play on many holes. When there is no water there was OB or trees (or both). My only issue with the course is that it doesn't drain well and although we had no rain in previous 4 days it was still mushy in many areas. Some areas around greens lacked consistency in terms of the amount of grass, some thick, some bare areas which make chipping an unknown adventure.

Must bring your "A" game

I played in the Golf Channel Am Tour event and truly my score reflected poor play versus the difficulty of the course. It is a fair but challenging course, and bring along a few extra balls if you are not playing well. Hope to get a second shot at this course some day.
