Great Muni for only $23

This course is always fun to play. The conditions are great, tee boxes are nice, fairways are nice, and the greens roll really nice but with some rough spots. The course has a lot of hills which make some holes easy and some holes feel extremely long. From the tips it only plays 6300 and from the front around 4300. On the front number 4 has water but the back nine is where water really comes into play. The putting green and driving range are nice. The clubhouse and pro shop are great. Overall a fun muni to play, especially since all the other courses in the Tallahassee area will cost you around 50 a person. I have played here multiple times and will come back.

Good course for the area

Being one of the only public courses in the area, this is a good place to play. The range is "limited flight" and the practice balls could be updated but other than that fine. The course itself is in some need of being redone as the greens and tee boxes are in tough shape. There isn't much of a rough so it plays easier in that regard. The back 9 is more challenging and more fun.

Great Value Muni Course in Tallahassee

I play Hilaman once or twice a week, and am a member here. Jan does a fantastic job of managing this golf course, and I look forward to teeing it up every Saturday morning. This is not the longest golf courses you will play, as it is an old school layout on a very tight track of land in a neighborhood that is a bit dated, but the City of Tallahassee has recently pumped a ton of money into this course to get it in the best shape that I have seen it in ever. They recently redid the bunkers with new drainage last winter, and brand new fluffy sand. The greens are coming around and are in their best shape in quite awhile. The challenge of Hilaman is in how tight it is. I often say that if you can score low here, you can take your game to any other course, as you have to hit it straight here. Hole #2 is one of the hardest par 4's in Tallahassee. Hole #11 is all the golf hole you will want to handle as well. And hole #17 is a par 3 that if you par it, it's like birdie. Long and extremely narrow, only the best of tee shots are rewarded here. I would strongly recommend making a tee time, and finding out when the course is not so crowded. Because with Seminole closing, it is about to make Hilaman an extremely busy golf course. You'll probably need some patience to endure a round out here come August as there aren't too many other public courses in town.

They are working hard to make improvements

I love the layout of this course. It’s fair and fun (except for 11, my most hated hole ever). But they had sanded the greens and putting was hilarious. Still, this is a great value and they really are working hard to make the place better. I play it every time I can. The people are great and it’s always fun to play.

Great layout, not so great conditions

I really wanted to give this course more than 3 stars. I really enjoyed the layout, especially the back nine. The course offers a lot of elevation changes and imagination in the course design. I also thought that for $20 it could be a great deal. However, the course conditions were awful. Greens were hit or miss, the greens that were in good shape were rolling well, but there were some that had half the grass missing. Many of the teeboxes had almost no grass. There were several times I hit the ball in the fairway and was still hitting out of dirt. I think that if the course was in better shape I would easily give it a 4 or 5 star rating. I would recommend playing it if it were in top shape.

Best I've seen it

To be a city ran golf course, this is one of the best in the area. From tee to green it was in the best shape I've ever seen it. Everything was green and lush. The greens were in superb shape and was rolling smooth and fast. You won't find a better course for the money in the area. It is not a very long course so most people won't be able to hit driver on every hole but you will use every club in your bag. I highly recommend this course to anyone.

Expect a slow round, no matter when you play

Being a local muni course, expect pace of play to be very slow. Whether you go early, middle of the day, or even late. We teed off at 4:30. Starter let a 4some, 4some, 2some, single go back to back. Lead 4some was very slow, but no one seemed to care about pace of play.

Course is a good deal for the price. Greens aren't perfect but are pretty good. Interesting holes, some of them kind of tough.

Pro shop staff could use some customer service lessons. They all seem to be in their low 20s, so not sure what else to expect.

Affordable and Well Conditioned Course close to Downtown

The turf conditions are really good all around. Grass is green fairways and rough are well manicured. Most of the greens are firm and smooth. There is a restaurant on site. The only downside is the side of the driving range. As a result, you cannot use your driver on the range, but there are grass tees and it is also in good condition. All of this for 25 dollars on the weekdays and 40 on the weekends, I'll take it.

Fun, cheap course in middle of Tallahassee. Great for beginners!

This course is in pretty good condition. The fairways are the best part of the course and are in great condition. The tee boxes were average but some of them were pretty worn out. The greens were not in good shape and I would say about 2/3s were somewhat sandy and impossible to guess a line. The ball would bounce irregular due to the sand on the green, but for the price I paid ($15), I was content.

The course could do with a ranger because pace of play was pretty slow. This is a city course so there are a lot of below average and beginner golfers so lots of hacking and slow play in front.

Also the holes were tightly packed together so there were many times you would be hitting in the same direction as another tee box for another hole so keep your eyes open and hope nobody hits you!

I would play again--some of the holes were very interesting and course overall isn't terrible difficult.

decent course for the money

Decent course, friendly staff, can be challenging depending on what tees you play from. One of the only courses I've seen with "Play It Forward Tees". Big problem keeping local residence off the course: it is treated more like a public park than a golf course. I find myself having to yell at people to get off the course or get their kids/pets off the course. Hilaman retains a lot of water for some reason; this is most evident with their bunkers, (probably because the bunkers are 80% clay... not sand). Greens have a few rough spots and pace of play is ridiculously slow. Friendly staff and a nice points program that adds up to free rounds.

4/26/14. This course is now in excellent condition and there is a ranger constantly keeping a watchful eye on pace of play and local residents. Now a great value!
