Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center
About
Named after the Great Hall of the Norse god Odin, Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center was conceived more than half a century ago when six Cumberland residents decided that they didn't want to have to go all the way to Portland for a decent round of golf. They persevered with their idea and eventually established an 18-hole, par-72 course right in Cumberland Center. The golf course has a traditional layout that is heavily lined with trees. Accuracy is an important part of the round but if you can manage to hit straight, you'll have a good game. Strategically placed bunkers also lurk along the greensides and fairways. In addition to the golf course, there is a driving range and practice green. Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center is a scenic and more affordable alternative to other options in Portland.

Nice Course
The day was fairly nice weather wise but the course was on the cart path only rule and that meant the carts did not leave the path and we had a lot of walking to do on most every hole. This meant the pace of play was extremely slow, over 5 hours for 18 holes for a foursome. I would like to try it again on our net try to Maine so long as we could use the carts better.
The course allows player to use all clubs.
The greens need to be worked. Not very good for this day of golf.
I would like to play course later when greens are in better shape.
Course is in great shape for Spring golf
Just a few wet areas and mowed we'll in most areas. Greens are punched but quite in pretty good shape.
very disappointed
Last year i played and loved it. This year the greens were horrendous. I won't waste any more $ on this course. Hopefully the get better
Wet
The greens were horrible and bumpy, 2 temporary greens nd some of the fairways were soggy. Give it 2 more weeks of dry weather perhaps it'll recover somehow.
Plays long
Played in poor weather conditions which resulted in zero roll. Greens were in good shape considering the deluge of rain that had been dumped in previous days.
Back nine is laid out in a strange manner, but overall a nice course
Nice layout for an older course
I was pleasantly surprised by the receptive greens. The course is nicely maintained through the summer drought. The fairways and the greens were well watered and green, unlike some of the other courses in the area.
Love this place
Great track, great staff.
this course is very challenging
The course is in good shape fairways are very good . Greens could be more receptive.Overall a great experience , course , staff, and food.
Does not Disappoint!!
Val Halla is an incredible golf course and is in pristine condition. With all that said, this course is quite difficult and is not forgiving at all! The rough is really high and getting your ball in the fairway should be your goal on every hole. There are also quite a few quirky or blind tee shots and most players would improve their scores just by playing the course a few times. The driving range is super short and they only allowed irons cause the back of the net lines hole 7 or 8 I think. Otherwise, i really liked the course and I will for sure be back!
The golf police
This could be a fun, challenging course...but the GPS carts continually stop at unknown restricted areas, requiring reversing at snail pace and long delay of play.
The first two holes or more could be open for play but they will not let you start until the designated tee time, particularly if using GolfNow.
If you're not where you are supposed to be, the cart will stop you after three warnings in addition to the signage on the course. We ask all play to start on time regardless of the vendor you use to make a tee time. If you are a rules-follower, it's easy...if not, it's not. Anyway glad you recommended the course!
May Golf
Played Val Halla in Cumberland. Course in good shape for this time of year! The only critique I have is that the greens were slow.
Otherwise, a very challenging layout. The "ruff" was rough (as it should be). Great time. Book tee time online. GREAT price. EXCELLENT value!
Val Halla Experience
We were four Seniors on a golf trip and this was third course of the week. Course was in very good condition, staff was very courteous. We played the Maroon/White tees which was sufficient challenge for us, couldn't have had a better day (except maybe for some better scores, but not the VH fault). We had dinner at the club's restaurant which was outstanding!!! We will be including this course in our circuit for future trips.
Well kept and long.
The front nine is a little more difficult than the back. Numerous holes on the back are very similar ( long & straight ). Course layout isn't ideal but the cleanliness and the quality of experience makes it. Would recommend to a friend and will go back.
Great Municipal Course with light play
Overall an excellent experience
Great course
Excellent course some very challenging holes the only downfall was the 9-15 very open and straight not much of a challenge.
Great course
The staff at Val Halla golf course could not be nicer. The facilities are in great shape, club house and pro shop and grounds well maintained. Golf carts with GPS is a great feature! The course is in great shape and the greens are well taken care of. Over all a wonderful place to play. Thank you Val Halla.
Val Halla
Nice golf course in Cumberland, ME. The pace of play was excellent--we finished 18 holes in about 3:20. The golf carts are equipped with GPS giving a graphic display of the holes and hazards. The driving range was short, so hitting the driver, or any other club that you can carry 200 yards, is a no-no. On the day that we played, the range was mats only. We didn't eat so really can't comment on the food other than the cart GPS allows you order food so that it will be ready before you start the back 9.
This course is a typical Muni course
I hadn't played this course in ten years, not since they had changed the layout. I wasn't impressed with the course back then, they didn't do anything to change my feelings about the course. Greens had a lot of ball marks on them. My son and I fixed several on each hole, most of them were fresh that day. The price was right through Golf Now, would have been very. disappointed had we paid full price.
Nice course
Course in good condition. Challenging at times - tight fairways, long rough and super quick greens. Bar staff and food best in the business.
Good news...as the weather has gotten better, we've gotten better. Please return and you should see a significant difference.
