Poor greens

The layout and holes are spectacular but greens are either diseased or burnt out. 85$ is too much for the conditions

Perfection in Maine

When you think of Maine, you think of lobsters, black bears and bitter cold. What doesn’t come to mind is golf. The Ledges Golf Course in York Maine compares to some of the best golf courses I have ever played. The views and course layout are fantastic. The greens are perfect and if you are in the wrong spot, a nasty three putt awaits you. I consider myself a good putter (8 handicap), yet I four putted the 3rd hole. Yes, four putted. I didn’t think that was possible. If you are in Maine and want to play golf, the Ledges has to be number one on your list.

Great course with challenging layout

I was visiting this area for work. My son and I decided to get around of golf in .We paid nine hole rate for $40 after 5 PM. Thought the price was a little steep considering it was after 5 PM. But it was totally worth it. Outstanding golf course with a great layout and super friendly staff. Some great scenery especially the par 3 downhill over the water. When you get to number 18, it’s a true challenge closing hole
Highly recommend playing this golf course.

Challenging

In keeping with our choices, I knew ahead of time that this might be a little more challenging for our game and I was right.
Lots of elevation and it doesn't just quite fit the game at times.
We were fortunate enough to have a pairing pared with us and that helped more than anything.
It was holiday weekend and it was a tad slow at times, but we managed through it and checked off Maine golf from our list.

Lots of elevation changes

Nice course and decently kept but lots of divots throughout. Greens were quick but unmemoriable. Solid course but don’t feel the need to go back.

Hidden Gem

You will enjoy this golf experience from check-in to the last putt. The golf course is secluded and very quiet with great views. Tom, (the starter) was super-friendly and very informative. The golf course layout was excellent and the conditions were VERY GOOD! There is plenty of elevation changes and the green complexes are contoured but not outrageous. Greens were fast & smooth. The golf course is NOT a bomber's track, but a thinker's track (although the bombers can let it fly at several opportunities). There are some hidden hazards (off the fairway) that need respect. Overall I would play here again, without reservation!

Best greens around!

Fantastic golf course. The greens are fastest I've played on public courses in New England. They are fast and true. Can't ask for anything better.

Layout and overall condition is great too.

One of the best public courses around. We make the drive from Boston often to play here.

Beautiful public golf in Southern Maine

The Ledges golf club in York is a higher-end daily fee public course which is well worth the time and money. The clubhouse is modest and the practice range and putting green are well marked and close to the first tee which in my opinion, is an underrated feature of better courses. The layout of the golf course was challenging but it seemed like there was some forgiveness on each hole....if you knew where it was. Playing this course a second or third time could definitely yield lower scores just with course knowledge. The rough is thick and the native grass seemed almost impossible to hit out of. The greens were perfectly manicured and were rolling true and fast. The signature par-3 8th hole, downhill over water was incredible yet an intimidating tee shot nonetheless. I would recommend this course to anyone in the area. Its a great public course for a decent price!

Bravo to The Ledges

Oh. My. Goodness!

Just played my favorite golf course. Ever! The Ledges in York, ME.

The Staff: I’ve been treated very well by club staff at lots of public-play golf courses. But, trust me, I have very been treated as well as I was yesterday at The Ledges in York, ME. Start with the head pro, who walked out of his small shop to shake my hand and welcome me to his course. Same with his assistant and with the course ranger and the waitstaff in the club room. What a wonderful way to begin a round of golf. The staff at The Ledges are, very simply, the most golfer-friendly anywhere.

There is a public course in Plymouth, MA that advertises to golfers “Come and be a member for a day”. But no course, anywhere, delivers on this promise as does The Ledges.

The Property: This is, for sure, a beautiful 200-acre site. Wonderful vistas everywhere, lots of elevation and elevation changes, enough acreage to place most holes so that you get a sense that the hole you are playing is the only one out there. And the owner at The Ledges has done a beautiful job of placing the small clubhouse. And where are the maintenance buildings? They are hidden from view. This place is just gorgeous.

The Course Architecture: Talk with knowledgeable golfers who have played The Ledges. Ask them to name their favorite hole. In fact, I did that very thing yesterday, talked with 8 players. They each named a different hole. That’s because course architect Brad Booth wanted golfers to experience something special on each of the eight holes. Booth pulled off this very same feat at The Oaks in Somersworth, NH.

There’s lots of talk about The Ledges eighth hole, a downhill mid-length par-three protected by water on the left side. Great hole, but not my favorite. I’d pick the eighteen. It’s a par five and it’s a brute with a forced-carry second shot and a green sitting high above the fairway. Making a regulation par on this monster calls for special celebration at the 19th hole. What a grand finishing hole Brad Booth has created.

Course Condition: Good luck to every golf course owner in Northern New England. And good luck to every greenskeeper. This winter, this ugly spring, the snow, the ice...But the tee boxes at The Ledges somehow survived mother nature this year. There is no crowning and the turf is great. Most of the fairways are quite good. There are some bare patches in the rough areas (a problem solved by simply not hitting the ball into the rough!). My guess is that complete grown-in will be accomplished by September.

The Greens: Not perfect; some damaged areas recuperating from spring ice. Greens otherwise roll fast and true. Some of the greens provide big-time challenges.

The Price: Here’s a tough formula: the high property values in the area, a highly-involved world class architect, the high costs involved in shaping a golf course out of granite ledges, the best golf staff anywhere. Costs for the owner of The Ledges are high, that’s for sure. Hence, a peak season green fee of $92.00 (including cart and taxes). If you think that’s too expensive for your golfing budget, The Ledges provides a post-3 pm rate of $46 (cart & taxes included). That’s what we did...teed off just after 3 pm and we played this wonderful golf course in 2 hours and fifty minutes. My view: that’s a steal and we probably should have been arrested.

Bravo to The Ledges.

My Favorite New England Golf Course

I fell in love with The Ledges the first time I played it in 1999. It remains the perfect combination of great New England golf architecture, challenging golf holes with no two alike and excellent, manicured conditions. This course can play up to 7000 yards from the tips, which I did once, and I would not recommend unless you carry a solid single digit handicap. It can also play fairly for high handicappers from the forward tees. I grant you, it will frustrate some hackers and beginners, but hopefully they will work on their games and return to take it on again. This property was a golf architect's dream. The amazing elevation changes, expansive woodlots and the natural waterways all were there just waiting to be made into a golf paradise. William Bradley Booth pulled it off perfectly in creating this, his masterpiece. I really like the 3rd hole, which starts on an elevated tee on rocky ledge. You hit down into a valley with a hazard on the left and a gigantic outcropping of rock on the right. You then hit up to an elevated green and that has very few straight putts on it. The par 3 8th hole is another downhill beauty. You hit to a skinny green with a large lake on the left hand side. This is the photo opp hole. The 18th is a tough finishing hole. After driving it into a fairway with hazards on both sides, you must decide on your second shot if you are laying up short of a third hazard or if you are going to try to clear it with a heroic shot. If you choose to lay up, you still have a shot of 180+ left to the undulating green. A 6 is not a bad score on this finisher. The Ledges is always in great shape. It hosts US Amateur Qualifiers, so you know it has a well earned reputation. This past winter of devastating winter kill did a lot of damage to the greens at The Ledges. Very wisely they decided to aggressively reseed several greens and play a few temps until the end of June. This was great long term thinking by Supt. Joe Grady. The whole team here works together so well to do what's best for their loyal golfers. Matt Blasik is a great head professional and the entire staff follows his lead. If you are lucky, Fred the 82 year old starter will tell you a funny story or two as you wait to tee off. The Ledges is always a top 5 course in Maine by those who do various ratings. To me, it is clearly number 1 for the foreseeable future.
