Safari outing

I was fortunate enough to play Heritage with the Safari Club. The course is interesting and fun. Holes are all different, with some huge changes in elevation, but it was fair. The greens were in great shape. The staff was excellent in terms of being helpful and friendly. I would love to play there again, and plan to return in September for an outing. Food was excellent too. Easy to get to from the Mass Pike.

Outstanding golf course; excellent layout

Heritage Country Club golf course was a real pleasure to play. The course was in terrific condition. The greens were in especially great shape. Each golf hole had its own unique character. I am anxious to play the course again, and would highly recommend it to all my golf buddies!

The meal after the golf round was really delicious and the staff that served it is we're delightful.

Overall, I would rate my experience at Heritage an A+

Safari adventure

It's about an hour from Agawam, Mass., but well worth the ride...this is a "quirky" course with many elevation changes. Some shots are downhill, then uphill, then uphill again...you will use all the clubs in your bag...It was our first time playing this course.
This would be a wonderful course to play in the fall. Glad we are returning next year..

UNBELIEVABLE!

This was the Safari Club's first visit, as well as mine. Ordinarily I'm not big on surprises. But if they were all like this one I'd have a lot more desire to have them occur on a regular basis.

This place has everything any reasonable minded amateur golfer could possibly want or expect. An absolutely wonderful 18 DIFFERENT holes to play, a tremendously warm and accommodating staff and if you decide to eat here you may never want to leave.

The most interesting thing is this venue came up on the Safari Club's radar screen because of an issue with a couple other courses that were previously scheduled this week. It just goes to show that sometimes things really do work out for the best.

If you want another great destination golf course this is one that should be high up on your list.

Excellent Central Mass. Course

Played this on Wed. with the Safari Group. It was my first time playing the course, and I was very impressed. Course was in excellent condition. The layout was very interesting with no two holes that were alike. A lot of terrain changes, and it was challenging, but fair. The staff was great from the time we arrived and throughout the day. They prepared an excellent buffet that was well received by everyone. I would definitely would play again.

Top 10

Played this week with the Safari Club. This was an alternate course that was a replacement for a previous destination. Sometime things just work out. What a beautiful course, a pleasure to play, will definitely return. Staff and food was top notch. Give it a try.

We went as a group of 125+ Golfers for the first time. What a positive experience for everyone! From the Pro shop to the extremely interesting layout, maintained very well by the way, to the many beautiful vistas. Lets not forget the awesome 19th Hole, with a great staff. Check it out friends!!!

Super day of Golf with the Safari Golf Club

Yesterday I played golf with the Safari Golf Club and we had a super time. The course was in excellent shape and the green were the best we have played this year. We played form the blue tees and it gave everyone a great chance to score well. After the round they had a lunch for use . It was the best lunch were have had this season. Family style salad, stuffed chicken breast with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green beans and carrots with strawberry shortcake for desert. They treated us like kings and queens. Cannot wait to play their next year.

Test your game.

Less than an hours drive from my house, accessible from I 84, I 90, and rt 20, in Charleton MA is Heritage Country Club. It is a relatively long course on paper but I think it plays shorter due to so many elevation changes. The fairways are in mid-summer condition and the greens were superb and fast, with subtle undulations that made you scratch your head. Accuracy off the tee, rather than length is important with sloped, tree lined fairways. Good length on par5's and par 3's although the par 4's were relatively short with plenty of fairway bunkers to avoid.
I played this course with my friends in The Safari Club and I think we will return every chance we get because the staff was so courteous and attentive to our needs. A "lunch" was provided with our round of golf. (lunch was baked stuffed chicken with potatoes and veg. with surprise strawberry shortcake for desert)The food was excellent, the desert was unexpected and awesome.
Good times, good people, great staff, great course!

Conditions were. Excellent. I am not a good player so so I appreciate a course that I can handle but also challenging enough for the good players. Everything was very well organized for our event. The food was great. Only problem I ate too much!!

UP and DOWN

THE BASICS: The course is an eclectic mix of holes carved out of the hilly woodlands located just off of RT 20 in Charlton, MA. I found it difficult and not much fun this first time playing there. I prefer slightly flatter courses with wider fairways and not knowing the course layout didn’t help. Since course knowledge is so crucial at Heritage, we were lucky to have a local golfer in our foursome to point out the nuances. Knowing which side of the fairway to hit your next shot and how far was essential. There are six irrigation ponds on the course and one, small brook on the 12th hole. All come into play. The numerous sand traps were well-groomed and strategically located. (One player in our foursome found most of them during the round) The fairways were well-maintained and the greens slightly undulating and fast. The rough between holes in the center of the course was playable, but the rough on the fringes was a lost ball, especially with the piles of blown leaves. Playing in the fall, with leaves on the ground, was difficult and we lost 4-5 balls that were hit “down the middle” due to leaves. (I would avoid early Monday morning tee times to give the maintenance staff time to clear the leaves from the fairways and greens) The cart paths were in bad shape; bumpy and broken up. They should be replaced with gravel as they deteriorate. Walking this course could be difficult for anyone not in good shape. Walking has one advantage however. Many fairways (not just the par 3’s) are roped off from the cart path, which prevented us from reaching our balls easily. We had to take 2-3 clubs to the general area we thought we hit our ball. Why some fairways were restricted, we did not know. They were not wet. Yardage stakes in the fairways were so small they could hardly be seen.

Upon arriving you drive past the 11th fairway to a large clubhouse located on top of a hill that overlooks the course. The semi-circular driveway has the bag drop and the pro shop can be accessed from there. Rates were reasonable for this time of year (Oct); $39 included a cart and lunch. Seniors are $34. The course has a driving range and a small, narrow putting green. There were also plenty of water jugs on the course to keep players hydrated.

COURSE LAYOUT: Heritage feels longer than the scorecard shows due to the extreme elevation changes. The tees ranges from 6796 (black) – 6347 (gold) - 6000 (blue) – 5415 (red). We played from the blues. Anyone playing this course needs to have accurate drives and a good approach and short game as the course is very tight. Because of the hilly terrain many holes are blind shots to the greens or 1 or 2 clubs more or less off the tee or fairway.

QUICK TIPS: The 1st hole, a 345 yd. (blues) downhill/uphill, dogleg right requires a very straight drive. Anything left leaves no shot to the green and a slice could end up in a pond. Second hole: The highlight on this hole was one of our carts died at the tee box. We called for a replacement, which arrived within 5 minutes. Fifth hole: favor the left side fairway. Ninth hole: favor the left side fairway also and if you drive short, a layup may be needed as a small pond protects the elevated green short and left. The back nine has two, monster par 5’s: the 12th is 565 yds (blues) and the 17th, 525 yds (blues) but they can be made shorter if the blue markers are moved up. The 12th, the #1 handicap hole, starts with a drive down a steep hill. A small brook catches longish drives so plan accordingly but favor the left side of the fairway off the tee. Your next shot is a blind, uphill shot. Again, keep it left as a small, unseen pond awaits below the green and right. The 18th is a downhill/uphill hole. After your drive 1 or 2 clubs more is needed to reach the elevated green. After trudging up the 18th fairway we were all looking forward to a rest and drinks.

RESTAURANT: After our round we collected on the included lunch in a very large restaurant with a large, sunken bar surrounded by comfortable, round back, vinyl chairs on castors. It appears they do a lot of banquets here.

ANALYSIS: Heritage is a reasonably-priced, tough track that requires course knowledge to score low. There are a lot of up ‘n down, narrow fairways. It is not a destination course but appears popular with the locals. It could be difficult, due to the terrain for women and for beginners who can’t hit the ball straight. The pace of play was fine (4 hours) although I don’t know how it is when busy. A Ranger was present on this slow day and checking on things.
