Wide open fairways, accessible greens that putt fast

I played the Oaks a couple of weeks after playing The Azaleas course. Both are in fine condition. I found the Oaks to be shorter, more wide open, and the greens more easily accessible than at The Azaleas. The greens also putted noticeably faster.

The opening hole is a Par 3, at only 312y (I played the Whites). There are 2 other par 4s less than 300y. 6100y total. Of course, there are 5 sets of tees overall so you can get a distance challenge if you need it.

While there are trees all along the course, unlike the Azaleas where the trees tightly line many fairways (fairway, then trees), on the Oaks, there seems to be more room from the fairway, then rough, and then trees. It just seems more wide open.

What was a real difference is the entrances to the greens. Not a lot of uphill greens or heavy bunkering, just an open green with some trouble left or right or long. The par 3s were also a bit more playable.

Another real difference was the speed of putting. These greens were definitely faster. Maybe it was the cut but I played a day after some rain, early in the morning. This usually slows the greens down a bit. Not today. They were not lighting but certainly faster than what I experienced at The Azaleas.

Dancing Rabbit has 2 very nice courses well worth any drive you may have to get to them. Play both and you are definitely playing two distinct courses but both well-maintained and well worth the trip.

Great course

It’s a beautiful layout and a beautiful course. It’s a tough and challenging course. Had a lot of fun and looking forward to playing it again.

Great value at the rate we got it at.
Greens were true and nice paced. I like the Oaks layout better than Azaleas track. Always enjoy the experience at the Rabbit and appreciate the special rates when they are available.

Course was terribly wet from recent deluges. Still, a good value st $35 after 12 pm.

The Oaks course is punctuated by a strong collection of par 3s and a fantastic inward nine.

All of the par 3s play downhill - perhaps the only qualm - but feature dramatic shots.

I am a big fan of short par 4s, and Fazio begins the back nine with one. From there, the holes unfurl, building to a tremendous finish, highlighted by the par-4 15th. I consider it the best hole on the course, even though it plays only ~350 yards. The dogleg left requires less than driver off the tee. You must decide whether to take on the bunker at the inside of the dogleg or play more conservatively toward the center. I did the latter and hit what I thought was the perfect 3-wood, only to find my approach shot hindered by a back right pin that was blocked out by a towering loblolly pine. A creek fronts the green, so I was forced to play a lower trajectory punch shot that was a lot of fun.

Brandon, I recently moved to Bham for a job and am trying to get my parents to move to Alabama from San Antonio, Texas. My father insists on using his own cart. Are there ANY golf courses in the area that will allow members to use their own carts?

Greatest golf for the area by far!

When you travel and play golf you’re often at a loss in many places to find quality golf courses. Dancing Rabbit is a gem. Challenging, remote feeling, not encumbered with residential decor, Dancing Rabbit offers in your face golf. Each shot requires focus and superb attention., For middle state golf it is a jewel in refined grass, sand and architecture.

The Oaks at Dancing Rabbit GC

Our group from Nashville, TN had never played golf in the Magnolia state prior to our recent visit that included rounds at Old Waverly GC, Mossy Oak GC and Dancing Rabbit GC. The Dancing Rabbit GC leg of the trip was preceded by three days staying on property and playing golf at Old Waverly and Mossy Oak. After playing the Bob Cupp designed course at Old Waverly and Gil Hanse designed course at Mossy Oak, we made the hour and a half drive to Philadelphia from West Point to play the Tom Fazio designed Oaks and Azaleas courses at Dancing Rabbit.

The Oaks course at Dancing Rabbit is Tom Fazio at his best. The Oaks course features generous Zoysia fairways that were in excellent shape. The bermuda greens are large and despite being slow due to topdressing, were healthy and rolled true. The bunkering style is typical other Fazio designed courses built in the late 90's and on several holes the liners were visible and in need of repair, but at $70 per player it's understandable that the bulk of the course budget is devoted to greens and fairways. The cart paths are also in need of repair in several places, but these are very minor gripes on what is an otherwise outstanding layout.

The property on which the course is laid out is expansive with each hole being separate and distinct. The fairways are lined with towering pines and hardwoods and wildlife can be spotted on nearly every hole. The elevation changes on the property are dramatic and it's hard to believe at times that you're playing golf in Mississippi and not the mountains of North Carolina or Georgia. Native grasses are planted across the property and if the player strays from the generous fairways, lost balls are inevitable. The Par 3's are mainly of the drop shot variety and club selection is paramount as it's easy to come up both short or go long on any given hole.

The Par 4 and Par 5 holes are routinely punctuated by blind or semi-blind tee shots. Additionally, many of the Par 4 and 5 holes play downhill. Sidehill lies are not uncommon and many of the fairways are designed to kick tee shots either left or right. Our group has some long hitters off the tee but being long is not always the best strategy on many of the holes. A good long iron player will excel on the Oaks course and it's equally important to be skilled with a wedge in your hand 100 yds into the green.

Overall, the Oaks course rewards skilled players with scoring opportunities but gives less skilled players a chance at bogies by keeping their ball in play off the tee due to the generous fairways. For the money, you'd be hard pressed to find a better conditioned course in the region that's also architecturally stimulating.

The only negative part of the experience at the Oaks course has nothing to do with golf and more to do with service. The service is severely lacking at Dancing Rabbit GC. Employees on the property don't seem at all concerned with enhancing the player's experience. The employees aren't rude or mean, they're just disinterested.

danicing rabbit, oaks course

It has been Number of years since I played this course; I don't hit it as long as I used to, so I played the sliver tees. It was the perfect distance being the oaks course has a lot of ridges and valleys; For being this time of year, march the course was greener than my home area, Memphis; I am still impressed by dancing rabbit courses and would definitely come back her; they had off season rates good til end of march I believe;If I go back in the summer time I am sure it will be more expensive, but still worth the price;
Definitely go theses courses in Philadelphia, ms; well worth it!!
