Best Course for the Money
This course is great for any skill level although there are some challenging holes. I would compare the quality of greens to any high $$$ course in the area. Overall a great course and probably the best in the price range.
Great Staff ... worked with everyone thru numerous rain delays. Enjoyed our round! Will be back.
Good value course
First off, just as in life, you get what you pay for...... Inexpensive course, with good value ......Greens are in puttable conditions...... Very rough cartpaths......Fun layout......Overall a short course.......I played here in May of 2018..... In town for Pointfest......Found this course of Golfnow......Great experience minus the front desk guy, he probably needs to do something else for a living.....He showed zero patience and was abrasive.....I think the rates are around $30 for 18, if your trying to impress somebody, spend $15-20 more and go somewhere else.
Dirt cheap but still not worth it! (emphasis on Dirt)
I have played hundreds of courses over my illustrious golf career but none have even come close to being as awful as Sunset Hills. My friends and I had the unfortunate pleasure of playing this course on an otherwise beautiful St. Louis Saturday. We made the mistake of booking whatever course was available last minute without properly vetting before hand so hopefully my review can steer you away should you have the preposterous idea of wanting to waste your time playing this dog track.
The first thing I want to talk about, and the main reason I wanted to write this review, is that the course literally DOES NOT HAVE FAIRWAYS. The area where the fairways should be is comprised of a mixture of mud/dirt, weeds, tiny patches of grass, and large puddles of water that accumulate after mild rain due to the abysmal layout and drainage features of the course. I kid you not, I could hit a perfect drive dead center and have a shittier lie than my friend JJ who shanked it a football field to the right.
Now, let's talk about the tee boxes. Depending on the hole, you may be hitting off of the side of a hill, a small mound with a tiny patch of dead grass and weeds, or even a large square of dirt. You will hit multiple tee shots where you are standing 3/4 inches above/below the ball.
The greens were in decent shape (relative to the rest of the course) and had been punched in the past 2 weeks. Had they not been recently punched they would have been the single redeeming feature of the course.
The people running the place were nice; the beer is cheap and the hot dog surprisingly good, but they clearly want it to be a "you get what you pay for experience". The problem here is that, even for $35 for an 18 hole round with a cart on a Saturday, IT IS NOT WORTH IT! DO NOT FALL FOR THE CHEAP PRICE! I would put "fair value" on my experience around $2.50 and it would be a stretch to get me to pay that. You are much better off to shell out the extra $15-20 and play a course that enjoys the finer amenities of golf like fairways and tee boxes.
I truly hope that the course was just in a transitory period and will look better as the season is in full swing. In the condition we played it in, I would not wish for my worst enemy to be forced to play at Sunset Hills. The worst golf experience I have EVER had.
First time playing, I will be back
I always like to read the reviews prior to trying a new course. I played this course last Wednesday. I liked it, very open course not to difficult. I will play again for sure.
Bad Fairways
Really nice people and not sure when the fairways went to the terrible condition that they are in. Surprisingly the greens were in good shape. Great value if you are learning to golf and find a HOT DEAL!
Will never play again
The course is below average at best and the manager was rude and unprofessional. I will not play here again.
Horrible Experience.
I've played this course once, in the middle of the winter and it's what you get for the money. However, I recently went in to get a tee-time around 1:00 pm on a Tuesday. I asked to get out for 18 and he was going to charge me $35. I mentioned there's a cheaper rate on GolfNow and he got super defensive and basically told me that if I'm going to book a tee-time through GolfNow ($27) that he will just close the tee sheet out and I won't be able to process the time.
I told him I would just pay the $35 as I was already there, wanted to play and was short on time. So, I asked for future reference of what he was meaning, and why he would do that.... which this is where things turned south. He got upset about potentially losing maybe $7-$8 so much that he started throwing a fit. I was merely trying to understand and this guy was going off. Told me to tell everyone I know about my experience, so here I am. He lost out on the $35 I agreed to pay all because he thinks he doesn't need my business or others.
His words: "It's a private company, I can do what I please."
My suggestion to you: "It's a free nation, go play elsewhere. Shoot, go play Riverside for less money and the same conditions!"
The guy was the manager. I've played A LOT of golf and this was the worst treatment I've ever been given at a golf course. Spend your money and time elsewhere. It's St. Louis, you've GOT OPTIONS!!!!!!
Thanks for taking the time to respond? You seem to act like you care now, when the gentleman that supposedly ran the place, couldn't give two hoots about a customer.
Good luck watching those 1 star reviews grow.
ok course
greens are good condition but very slow. fairways are not in very good condition. tee boxes are bad.
Worse than ever
This course has fought through flooding and ow worship changes for years. Right now is by far the worst it has ever been. The grounds are unkept and it appears they are letting the rough grow uncontrollably. This is not a links style course so it makes no sense why they allow this other than lack of experience and/or lack of finances. Save your time and play Riverside or another nearby course for the same $$.
Worth The Money
For $30 I can not complain about the course too much. The fairways were in decent condition considering the dry spell we have been in. The greens could have been kept up better but I have seen worse.
Many fairways are wide enough to allow error and greens are not too difficult to read. The rough was not overly bad. There are a few holes with hazards which you need to lay up. It was fun to play and worth the money.
The staff was nice, their choice of food is limited but tasted okay.
I will play here again.
The course was in pretty good shape
The course was decent but the greens were too slow. Good shape but slow. Other than that, good round at reasonable price. Would recommend.
Tea boxes were hard as a rock. No Marshall to keep play moving.
Value and good course condition
Other than the tee boxes being a little dry, the course was in very good condition. The greens are true and pretty good considering the course can be flooded at times. Fantastic value for the quality and the price.
Stay Away!!
Worst experience I've ever had. The lawnmower was broke so the grass was so long that you couldn't find your ball. I lost 6 balls in 4 holes and all shots were in play. I quit and went to clubhouse and was told no refund and. I raincheck. I was also told they knew about grass and forgot to tell me. What's even better is I check my bank account the next day and find out I was double charged. No one will answer at the clubhouse now. Unreal.
A journey in lost balls
The course layout and clubhouse were both fine; however, as another reviewer wrote, it appeared nothing but the greens has been mowed in quite some time. A drive could be hit down the center of the fairway, and you couldn't locate your ball in the high grass. Even at some of the greens beyond the "green surface", there was grass probably 4-6" tall, so you could literally be on 'the fringe", but the fringe was so tall, it was very difficult, not to mention frustrating.
Mow the grass
Do yourself a favor and play somewhere else. This course was in absolutely terrible shape. The rough was 6" tall in places it shouldn't be. I actually lost a ball pin high off the side of the green in the rough. I went inside to speak to the manager and he wasn't in. I asked the employee why it was in such bad shape and he said they had a broken mower, but I'm not sure if I believe that. I asked when the manager would be back in and he said the following day between 10 and 2. I called the next day, he wasn't there. I left my name and number and still have not heard back. I will never play here again.
I came here to write a review but you nailed it. Develop the land this place is FUBAR!
