Just Something About This Course…

I’ve played here numerous times and while “historic” there’s just something increasingly unattractive about EM, feeling more like a “practice grounds” than anything else. Being inserted into public space, abutting industrial infrastructure, and the notorious proximity to pedestrians and homeless have not helped the appeal of this course. While unfortunately these factors are out of the control of the course itself, it detracts that much more when the course conditions and amenities are in poor shape. The fairways were in the worst condition I’ve seen since playing over the last two years. An excellent drive would find itself in hard slick mud surrounded by clover. I understand this course is susceptible to rain, but I’ve played here in winter conditions and at least the approaches had “grass” available to hit off, albeit soggy. If you’re seeking that memorable feel of a weekend golf outing with your foursome, invest in a better quality track where the weekend rate feels justified.

Good condition despite the rain

Eastmoreland is not what I would call a good drainage course, but the rain over the weekend was some of the first of the fall, so the course was still in very good condition. We were the first foursome out so pace of play was no problem - we finished in four hours.

Pleasant round

conditions were great for having just had over an inch of rain the day before. Well maintained with good pace of play, well kept facility.

Hard greens, bare fairways and bums in the bushes.

I know the conditions were unusual, but I won't waste my time there again.

Good Layout Fun to play

Course conditions with recent hot weather better than I expected. Fairways abd green very good. Challenging holes with water and tight fairways with tall fir trees lining many fairways, but fun to play because a good variety of holes.

The good, the bad, the ugly

The Good: Course conditions in the summertime have been solid - even with the current heatwave. Sure, there are some dry patches and goose poop - but by and large the conditions are playable. Greens are especially nice right now. I also enjoy this course layout. It's challenging, unique, and requires you to use your full bag of clubs.

The Bad: The range balls are straight up the worst range balls in Portland ... yet somehow they're also the most expensive. It's a shame because this course is right around the corner from my house and if the range was better I'd be here all the time. This course also has serious drainage problems in the winter - you're better off at any other local course than EM once it starts raining.

The Ugly: This staff is hands down the least friendly I've come across at a PNW course. Every single time I've been to the course (which is probably getting close to 25 visits) I've had a negative experience with one - or all - of the staff members. The guys behind the counter make you feel like you're being a pain for just paying for your round. The male starter is rude and dismissive. And the head pro is only nice to his buddies at the course. The female starter and cart ladies are actually the only exception to this rule. They've been generally pleasant to interface with.

Typically, I don't care. The only reason I feel compelled to write this review is because of my last experience.

All the usual suspects were rude to me and the guys I was playing with. At the turn, I went to see if I could fill my water bottle (it was a 104 degree day) and all the guy working the snack shack said was "did you not read the sign?" ... Covid restrictions meant he wouldn't fill the bottle (fair enough - I get that) but the guy also wasn't wearing a mask lol. It was obvious he simply found me annoying for wanting water, and he was ready to go back to sitting at the table with his buddies. He then told me I could go to the bathroom and fill it, or I could pay $2.25 for a 16oz water. I declined thinking I'd just grab water from the cart girl. Whoops! My mistake. That same day they sent the cart lady home early, (it couldn't have been later than 5:30pm) leaving a packed course without water. We decided to cut our round short a couple holes later because we were dehydrated and there was no water in sight. I have a feeling we weren't the only ones that day.

Since then, I've decided I'm not going to go to EM anymore. There are too many other courses around Portland that are fun to play and employ a staff that doesn't hate you.

Great course and a great value

The fairways and greens were in great condition at Eastmoreland despite a really hot Portland summer. While the rough was a little patchy in places, it didn't bother me as that made it a little easier to recover from a wayward drive.

It's a real thinking man's golf course. Slopes on the green don't look steep, but good luck keeping it close to the hole if you're above the pin. Some par 4s don't require driver, and the angle of your approach is far more important.

Highly recommend this course!

Great shape given dry conditions

Eastmoreland is a great layout… challenging but fair. A little overpriced, but relatively a good value. Better with GolfNow hotdeals. Very walkable.

First time Playing at Eastmoreland

First time playing at Eastmoreland. Nice public golf course within the Portland City limits. Fairways were a a bit thin but OK. Greens were in excellent condition and made the course interesting as they ran fast with many undulations. Played in 4 hours 10 minutes, lots more walking on back nine as some of the holes were spaced out. Worth the price paid.
