The par-5 fourth hole on the East Course at Dorado Beach Resort & Club is named the "Z" hole because its reverse Z-shaped fairway zigzags around two water hazards. Photo submitted by JasonDeeganGA on 02/06/2014

Restoration helps Dorado Beach make a stellar comeback
The first time I played the Dorado Beach Resort & Club's East Course in 2006 the large Hyatt hotel had just shut down and the everything looked like a ghost town. The course didn't offer much in the way of conditioning or a memorable round.
My second trip in 2011 to see the restoration by Robert Trent Jones Jr. helped me better understand why Dorado was the original celebrity Caribbean hangout.
Dorado's East Course has a storied past, including hosting eight Senior PGA Tour events. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. course opened in 1958 and expanded to 18 holes in 1966. Chi Chi Rodriguez, who worked here in the early 1960s, beat Doug Saunders in a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf event at Dorado in 1964.
The renovation added length to the 7,192-yard course, repositioned bunkers and restored RTJ Sr.'s signature runway tees. The new grass on the greens, ultra-dwarf Champion Bermuda, improved their pace and conditioning. Most important, the clearing of trees and undergrowth created wider fairways and added a critical element that was missing: The ocean is now partially visible from 15 holes. These scenic views won't blow you away, but they will remind you why Dorado once again ranks among the best courses in the Caribbean.
