Sadly Run down
I hate to be negative, so with a little work Hancock could be pretty good. Fairways were not cut in at least a week, the greens are not really greens - also not cut often enough - more like short fairways that were dog slow, and the ball doesn't roll as it should on any putting surface. I'll give the benefit of the doubt, and suspect there's too tight a maintenance budget that equates to near total neglect. It's too bad, since the layout is nice enough to make it a fun 9 hole course for the city folks. The City council should do something to fund it's existence as an Austin landmark, and relieve its current shame. Two unfortunate thumbs down.
July 2017, course is in bad shape.
Hancock has been a place I'll go to walk 9 holes, or get some practice in for cheap. However, it's been super hot in Texas and I decided to get a cart with a buddy for 9. It's $9 per person to use the cart. That's $18 outside of the green fee for the cart alone. For 9 holes.
Woulsnt be the end of the world if the course was well maintained. They had two temporary greens that they didn't inform me of. Some of the greens that they still had in service were absolutely terrible.
The color "Green" does NOT apply to the Greens"
Let me say 1st, that the staff at Hancock are GREAT!
Really friendly; very accommodating. And the golfing historical significance of Hancock is above reproach.
BUT-- ABSOLUTELY the WORST GREENS I'VE EVER SEEN!!!
Period.
The greens are so awful that there is little to no grass growing on them. There is literally way more sand, cracked black earth, dirt clods, grass clumps, and weeds on the green than grass. Sand traps on the greens?! C'mon.
So awful that the grounds crew has "carved out" makeshift temporary greens in the middle of the fairway. Have you ever tried putting on a fairway?!
Whatever your golfer's handicap is, give yourself an extra stroke on every hole for greens with absolutely no readability, consistency, or integrity.
Hancock was always one of my favorite courses before, but with the lack of proper greens maintenance over the past few months, it has moved way way down my list.
Every round played there should
be heavily heavily discounted until the green issue is sorted out. Otherwise, it's just sad from a golf and an horticultural standpoint. Sad though that Hancock doesn't offer Hot Deals anymore. So you're paying full price to play the worst greens in North America.
Nice 9 holes, awful greens
Hancock is a great 9 hole course for the money. Unfortunately the greens have been destroyed. I will not be playing there again until the greens are repaired, hopefully by August of 2017.
Ok City Course
Fairways ok, greens terrible.
Customer Service was poor and probably Golf now is at fault.
When I reserve a hot deal it always comes with the cart. We paid $7 for a 9 hole with no cart not even a pull cart. Cart was $13 and pull $9. I have paid $20 and at another Austin city course (18 holes) with cart and a much better course. If any they should include the pull cart as part of the fee for it to make sense.
My old course!
I grew up on this course over 50 years ago. Many great players have played here when they were young. Of course it has changed a lot over the 50 years and a much nicer course than the Hanrock that we knew of old. Course was in pretty nice condition, with greens a little fuzzy. We played with Golfnow at a great price, but watch it. If you want a cart they charge you $9 per person, or $18 per cart for 9 holes. Piece of junk cart that died probably 30 times. Highest cart rate I have ever seen.
Fun for casual practice, that's about it
This is the closest course to my house, but I almost never play it. It's a short nine holes, but it's not easy easy, so while I'd like to, I don't bring beginners here (Lions or Clay is better for that). It's also really not any more affordable than the other munis and is a far inferior experience. The 9th hole may be the silliest hole I've ever seen. My aim off the tee is the practice putting green. So if there are little kids putting I end up having to lay up and it ends up behind a tree or in the woods. Then there are power lines running across the green about 10 feet off the ground. There are so many great golf icons in the central Texas area that I'd love to see one of them give this place a redesign to make it more beginner-friendly. I think that's the only way this place makes sense. But I'll come swat balls out here around lunch or during twilight as a kind of glorified range.
One time only
Very old course, with a very high price. If you plan on playing this course and you have a disability plan on paying a lot more to take a cart
Fun Little Muni
Fun layout and great location near UT. Course was in decent shape, however pace of play was incredibly slow. Lot of college students.
Short and fun course
Fun playing a course that's been around since 1899. The short distance was good to walk instead of take a golf cart. And with the high probability of new golfers being in front of you there is no reason to rush around in a cart. Club selection is fun as well since there is no need to play a driver off the tee on pretty much every hole. I wish they provided every golfer with a divot tool, because walking up to the greens there were divots everywhere. I fixed several on every hole, again to be expected with lots of beginners. Overall Fun course downtown in the cool Hyde Park neighborhood.
Good and Dangerous
Hancock has good fairways and greens but pace of play is slow. Holes are very close to each other and in bad positions which makes it dangerous. Any ball that leaks a little left or right could and will fly by your head.
Get more carts
I have back problems and was told I would have to wait 45 minutes for a cart, so I had to schlep a bag full of clubs up and down this hilly course. Great place to get in a quick 9 holes. Will definitely return but really hoping they add some carts.
Hancock has been revitalized
Course is in great shape. Play it now before things change.
Nice Course
Worth the money, I've added it to the list of courses that I will play regularly.
Great for the price
Will play here as often as I can. Enjoyed it very much
Great Value
Not the nicest course in the world, but if you're just looking to get out for a couple hours it's tough to beat. Just be sure to bring your own food/drinks b/c they have extremely limited selection at the pro shop. Greens are super slow.
Hancock is a 9 hole course, period! Hot deals at Hancock never come with anything besides nine holes of golf. You cannot blame Golf Now for that!
