The Class of Galveston
I was fortunate enough to play Galveston Country Club on my recent vacation to Galveston. While the weather was hot, the day was almost perfect for golf.
Galveston CC is the oldest Country Club in Texas, and has been at it's current location since 1947. The course has been renovated in the last 20 years by Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy.
The course presents you with multiple risk/reward opportunities, along a layout with frequent direction changes. While the course is on a flat piece of property, it is still an interesting layout with great variety from hole to hole. I played on a relatively calm day, but with wind, the frequent changes in direction would be quite challenging.
The course is in very good condition. The greens roll fast and true and the fairways are well maintained with good roll out. The rough at Galveston CC is very challenging, so hit your ball straight!
My two favorite holes are the par 3 11th (pictured) and the par 5 14th (also pictured). The 11th is a medium length par 3 to a gorgeous backdrop. The 14th is a dogleg left par 5 that tempts you to go for it with a good tee shot. I did go for it and came up just short.
I highly recommend that, if given the opportunity, you play Galveston Country Club. It's private, so you will need an invitation, but if you get one, take advantage of it!
