Rocky Point Golf Course
About
Rocky Point Golf Course has one of the most interesting histories of any golf course in Florida. Originally opened in 1911 under the name f the Tampa Automobile Club, it was one of the first courses in the state. It closed in 1942 due to World War II. After being turned over to the city of Tampa for a mere $1, it reopened in 1954 as Rocky Point Golf Course. It is the closest golf course to Tampa International Airport, only a 15-minute drive away. The layout provides a fair challenge water hazards coming into play on 11 holes and sand bunkers strategically placed throughout. Rocky Point Golf Course's lakes are home to an abundance of wildlife and also serves as a bird sanctuary.

Limited layout probably due to location. Pretty decent fairway and green conditions.
Rocky Point Disaster
Pace of play was very slow. Course let's 8 players play who were celebrating some event. Took 50 min to play 2 holes. Course was in fair condition. Greens were good condition. Pace of play was annoying.
Greens are very good
Greens in good shape and course offers numerous club selections off the tees
People friendly
Nice course considering the lack of rain. Greens were in great condition, played true. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly.
Solid Course. Great Value
Live in Colorado and play on lots of courses. Our group really enjoyed the course and the day. For the cost and the fact the course was in good condition we definitely recommend it. We stayed at Reding Beach area so about 40 minute drive. Traffic was not a problem.
Worth playing if you can get a deal
First time playing, course conditions was good considering the dry weather at the moment. Greens are in good condition however i personally didn’t like them. I don’t believe they roll true. Apart from that course was good and worth playing if you can get a deal. Wouldn’t pay full price for a round!!
Drought Danger
Hard to review the course because the draught has taken its toll. The tee boxes were beaten up and fairways were largely burned out/patchy but there's not a lot the course can do about that. Same goes with Florida rough; there's no such thing other than crabgrass. The best part of the course was the greens. They were in fantastic shape and have been watered effectively. If there's only one thing about the course in good shape, it had better be the greens!
The layout isn't anything special but it did have some nice parts (approach on 5, second shot & approach on 15) while some holes had trees or bushes that, had they been cleared out or trimmed back, would make the holes look better (6, 7, 11, 16, 17, for example).
As far as recommending goes, it depends on who I'm recommending it to - if someone just wants to get some swings in or play a quick/unserious 18, sure. The pricing based on conditions should've been about $35-38. If they're looking for a course with character and challenge or they're a higher-level player, I'd tell them to look elsewhere.
Not Happy
I traveled to Tampa, FL and had never played a course in the area. Searched GN and this course came up. I wanted to see how the course was for the value in order to gauge future cost. The fairways were not in good shape nor were the greens. The course design is bad and is pretty flat and the water hazards are drying up so it is not cosmetically appealing. The pace was not being managed therefore there was a backup towards the back nine. I saw no Marshals. I can’t see playing this course on any future trips.
Rocky Point
Overall course condition is good. The green were putting at a good speed.Did not see any course marshall all day. Waiting time between shots was around 5-10 minutes at time.
Good for everyone
Course is in good condition considering the drought going on in the area. Challenging course for even the big bombers as trouble comes into play on the doglegs.
Play slowed as we got closer to the end of the round. Otherwise everything was fine.
I will return.
