A forgiving layout and fun meeting new kindred spirits. Photo submitted by u670585824 on 04/21/2017
Average condition for Early May
Fairways grass is still coming along but greens are quite good for May in Maine.
Early spring B+
They have issues to iron out with golf now. Apparently they do not honor tee times past 12pm and golf now offers them, so it was a bit of confusion and luckily they didn’t double book. We could tee off pretty close to our original time. 10th green is real bad almost unputtable. Winter kill or some fungus took over 90% of green.
Good value with Hot Deal
Course was in just average condition, pace of play was fine and timely. 10 minutes previous to tee time after already checking in and while warming up on practice green as other groups teed off, desk clerk approaches me asking where the remainder of our group is. I informed him that I had just messaged them in regards to their ETA, he insisted I call them and find out exact times, threatening to have to send me out as a single if they weren't there immediately. I reminded him our tee time was still ten minutes away and the group in front of us hadn't even got in their carts after hitting their tee shots. He was still persistent I call them, as I reach for my phone, the remainder of our party arrived at the pro shop entrance. Not a pleasant way to start a round
Play it
Great course. Can get busy during peak season. Find an off day and you can play in well under 4 hours. Greens are speedy with a bunch of subtle breaks. Great recovery after the weather early this week.
The Best
Best public course around. Great mix of value, conditions, atmosphere, pace of play and friendly staff. Highly recommend all skill levels.
Nice Muni Course in Portland, ME
This is a very nice municipal course. Overall, it isn't very difficult, but it does have some very tough holes, even for very skilled golfers. Course conditions are about average if you're used to private or resort courses, but well above average for muni's. There quite a few short par 4's, even from the tips. Par 3's require some precision, especially on the front 9. The staff, from check-in, starter, grill room, cart "girls", etc., are very friendly. I've been coming to Maine for summers since 1996 and avoided this course because no one recommended it (because of conditions). My guess is that the city of Portland decided to put some money into the course. Golf Now is helping them fill out the empty tee times. Handicap 9, age 71
Great golf day
Riverside is an excellent municipal course. Fairways and greens are in wonderful shape
Riverside North
I’ve been playing this course for nearly 40 years and never get tired of it. It’s a wonderful tract along the Presumpscot River (occasionally floods in the spring) on a hilly layout that’s easy to walk. Conditioning has improved over the years, and has benefited from strategic tree removal. The greens had just been punched for fall, and the putting was erratic. All in all, a great place to play a quick 18 holes (<4 hours!).
Great Day
I took advantage of a Great Golf Now rate and was paired up with a nice fellow. It was my 2nd time playing and his first time at Riverside. Due to pace of play, which was pretty slow, another pair joined up with us for a foursome. Fortunately the other 2 knew the course which was helpful to us neophytes. We had a nice round and enjoyed the company. Weather was perfect, course was challenging but fun, weather was great. Only issue was some greens had been aerated and putting was a real challenge.
I will be back for more punishment before I head back to Florida for the winter!!
They have been positive improvements thru-out.
The cutting of trees on both nine's have allowed for positive benefits to the greens. The course conditions have benefitted with the improvements.
Amazing
Not my first time here but it was a wonderful experience again and my wife loved it as it was her first time. Classic design, friendly staff, greens were smooth And lush. Course has really done some great things recently and I'm very impressed. Price was fantastic and we moved along in under 4 hours despite being a twosome behind some full groups. Truly enjoyable day and round of golf!
Fun munie course - pace of play a challenge
Played the course after a full day of rain the day prior - course wet but drained well. This is a fun course to play (especially the back 9) but I would not recommend walking until after you've played it once. Greens were rolling relatively fast.
My only knock would be the pace the play - - waited on just about every hole (starting with the 3rd hole). It's a shame that a ranger was never seen during the entire round. While I realize that the track is a municipal course, and the price is very reasonable, it's unfortunate that the pace of play cannot be addressed. On a positive note, I've played this course before and the pace of play was reasonable.
I Can See Clearly Now
Had a great day playing with people I hadn't met before!! Was very windy so it caused a higher score than I wanted. Oh well!
I left my glasses and case in the golf cart and didn't realize it until I got home. I called and inquired but no luck that evening. Friday I went over to the course and asked staff, still no luck. The golf cart attendant and starter assisted me in looking through all carts available by the club house. Cart attendant then took me to shed and we both checked those carts...still no luck. I called last night and Zack informed me they were found. This morning I got there early and picked them up. Thanks to all who showed concern and helped me look for them. I'll definitely be back to play again!!!

For a great day of golf
If you want a great day of playing golf play this course. It's in great shape very nice layout.
Good round good lunch
Good course that's fun and challenging. Don't forget to stop into the clubhoes at the turn and grab a hot dog or one of many pre made sandwiches and salads
4 hour round! Nice open layout.
Great value!
Beautiful day for golf.
I'll be back.
lots of green grass
Our 4 some enjoyed our round. The course quality is quite good but the greens were a little bumpy (occasionally) and slow.
Excellent golf cars (with auto braking feature)
Nice municipal course in Portland, ME
This was the 1st time playing the course. It turned out to be a very pleasant surprise in several ways: the price was quite affordable, particularly if you walk; the pace of play was very good (under 3 1/2 hours); layout and conditioning were better than expected, especially for a muni; the staff made you feel welcome, and they had a beverage cart. Missing was a driving range to warm up before playing. After the round, we went to the grill room for some craft beers. We didn't try anything on the menu because we had lunch at the nearby Allagash Brewing company (which offers free beer tasting) before our afternoon tee time.
