A forgiving layout and fun meeting new kindred spirits. Photo submitted by u670585824 on 04/21/2017
Fun course
It has enough variety and elevation changes to make it fun and challenging.
Value
This course has a nice layout. Being a municipal course it can get busy and backed up. Greens are in good shape and it has some long par 5's. We enjoy playing here then heading to the Old Port for some good eats.
The course was challenging but had a great layout. Stray shots were often playable which made the round more enjoyable.
Me and my brother-in-law were paired with two club members, Steve and Jake, they could not have been more hospitable. The round of golf with them was an enjoyable experience we will not forget.
We plan to return to this course when we visit the Portland area again, maybe next year.
I love this place!
For a municipal, public course, Riverside is as good as it gets IMHO.
Between their 'all the time' amazing rates, and an occasional special from GolfNow, why would anyone near by go anywhere else?
Considering a very wet spring
Although the course wasn't allowing carts because of the very wet spring here in Maine I found the conditions quite exceptable, no roll and the occasional plugged ball. The greens however were rolling pretty well and only a few cosmetic flaws. Of the courses I have played in Maine so far this spring (most of them farther north) this was in the driest shape.
Opening Day Conditions
Great value for an 18-hole course in Portland. Other courses around the area fluctuate between $30-$40 for a full round (walking) while Riverside generally has a more accessible price point. I have played the 9-hole South course several times, but saw an opportunity to play the North course and am glad that I did. Though the course was windy & soggy in places, the fairways & greens were in surprisingly good shape. Elevation changes make this course interesting to play, and a mid-handicapper like myself will find Riverside North a challenging alternative to other municipal courses in the area. Expect a good workout, this course is not for the faint of heart if you plan on walking. I will be playing Riverside North again in a few weeks with my father-in-law and will absolutely be driving a cart. All-in-all a great experience and I look forward to being back.
Fairways
Fairways have bare spots.where ball settles on hit shots. You have to place ball on grass for next shot most of the time.
Have Gas Will Drive!
With the rates available I will expend the $ to play there to stretch my game. I belong to a local par 3 and my short game is ok, but I love to really take a swing at the pill. Riverside is very generous with its layout and a little hook or slice is usually not a problem. The staff is amenable to fitting me in with others or solo, I prefer to join in. Great food at the 19th and the city should be commended for doing such a fine. job. Hey, if you need a lesson, check with my neighbor of yore, Abby Spector.
Lord willing I will be back, been enjoying RCC since the 70's.
Very enjoyable experience
4 of us played Riverside yesterday and were impressed with the condition of the course, considering how dry this summer has been. The staff was very friendly, as usual. We will be back.
Good golf
Riverside is a good course that has challenges throughout the 18 holes of the North Course. There are just enough challenges and forgiving fairways to make for an enjoyable round. Greens are consistent.
course has a very freindly layout
Enjoyed the corse would definetly play it again.
Very good municipal course
Nice course, well-organized staff and reasonable fees. Fairways are not the best but better than expected of a municipal course.
Simple, open course but fun to play!
Riverside is a GREAT value. The course is a simple layout but still exciting enough to keep you interested. The course is very wide open and forgiving which leads to good pace of play (for the most part) and plenty of opportunities to make birdies and go low. The greens aren't that quick but they're rolling true and pleasing to the eye. There are several drivable par-4s even from the back tees. Lots of fun and there are a ton of specials on golf now and if you walk the course.
Decent Spring Course Conditions
I am very familiar with Riverside Golf Course. I enjoy the open layout and challenges that each hole presents.
The course was in great condition for this time of year. The best in several years as usually I wait until late summer to play at Riverside.
Weather was excellent. Sunny, some wind and in the high 60's.
The value I got through Golf Now was amazing...$12 + fees (less than $16) for 18 holes!!! The fee included a cart but I like to walk. I met some great people and had great fun!
Spring Fling
Cold and windy, the greens were in excellent shape, but the fairways and rough had patchy inconsistent growth and were soggy in many places on the course. Sand traps, though raked and trooped, were often gravely and were like oatmeal....so tough to explode out of. I enjoyed the course layout.....lots of elevated tees. Hope to play again on my next visit to Portland when it is warmer.
Outstanding New & Improved
A mild Portland winter has brought great golf to Riverside Muni in April. Last year's greens were the best in many years, and promise to remain true. So much of the course has been groomed beautifully. Timbers pruned, woods thinned, lost ball magnets now open to sunlight while maintaining the demand for straight shots. Drainage areas addressed. New golf carts rode beautifully. I can't wait to meet the newly hired pro -- her email communications are so professional and supportive of building the game.
Great round of golf. Forward tees very supportive of shorter distance golfers and men's white tees were set up at national average slope rating.
Bravo professional staff! Great season ahead. Thanks.
