Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

Genoa Lakes Golf Course Photo submitted by Tobin9907509 on 09/28/2013
AMAZING Course....greens are worst I’ve ever seen
I play a lot of golf. Very accommodating to conditions as I just need them to be decent. This course is unbelievable. The views and layout are hard to beat
The greens though....I’ve played well over 100 courses and these are .2nd worst greens I’ve ever played on...only in front of sharp park in San Francisco. Definitely worth the trip but the greens are infested, patchy and bumpier than.
Still one of my favorite courses views/layouts I’ve ever played but the greens definitely take the experience down a notch
Nature and golf goes well together
The weather was hot somewhere but perfect here except for smoke from fires in surrounding areas. Glad we got out of town to play golf here. After few months of no golf due to COVID, this place was a hit. My hubby enjoyed as much as I did, awesome nature and a place to consider for retirement. Thank you.
Not a Championship Course
The course was in terrible shape. I booked this course because it was ranked as one of the better course in the area and after speaking with the staff in the proshop I was assured the course was in very good condition and I would not be disappointed. This could not be more inaccurate. There are large sections of the course that are completely burned out, other sections 50 by 60 yards that are roped off in the middle of fairways and the bunkers are devoid of sand. One of our players actually hurt himself by trying to hit an actual sand shot. Huge disappointment. Do not play here.
The Ranch Course
Great deal for $38 on a Saturday. Greens patchy in some places and medium speed but made a lot of putts. Front nine is fairly flat and undulating fairways provide interesting lies. Hole 8 and 9 on the front stand out. Back nine is great and holes 15,16 and 18 are amazing. Wind made things very interesting. Worth the 2.5 hr trip from Sacramento. Will be back for sure
The Ranch Course
Grabbed a great deal on GN and drove 2.5 hrs from Sac to play. Practice facilities were great with a very large green to chip and putt. Some bare spots around greens on some holes as we began and bunkers are bare and hard so opt for relief or pay at risk. Course is fairly flat at the beginning but the mountain views are big and rolling fairways can make uneven lies; Greens were medium speed. Back nine climbs into the hills and the views of Carson Valley below are very nice; course is dead silent. Hole 15 is spectacular and 16 is just amazing as the wind kicked up to near 20 mph and makes for an interesting forced carry onto a shallow green. Will definitely play again.
Historical Nevada Location
Next to the oldest settlement in the Silver State,
Genoa Lakes encompasses the grandeur of the western slopes of Lake Tahoe to the west, a wonderful wetlands that runs throughout the course and opens up the Carson Valley to the east with ranches and classic Nevada communities that still linger with one boot in the past.
Stunning views and a stunning course, every hole seems completely different than the last one or the next one; great condition and very challenging, from the water hazards, to the bunker placements, to the layout of the hole itself.
The Clubhouse looks like a Victorian mansion from a distant era - beautiful design inside and out, natural wood throughout and original painting of golf history and mountain mystery. Can't wait to play again; this place is pure class.
Great course for the price!
Course is always fun. Good course for all levels of golf!
Back nine with its elevation change is challenging and beautiful!
Always fun
Lovely Course, some areas need improvement
The layout is good and the staff friendly to this first time player.
Most fairways and greens in good shape, except #4. The greens have the potential to be faster, but I didn’t mind their speed.
I regularly walk when playing golf, but this would be a challenge. There are some distance between a few green-to-tee as well.
Recommend using a golf cart here.
Great layout. Back 9 more difficult. Windy.
Overall a good experience. Will play it again. Ran into a slow 4some of old geezers. Appeared to be regulars. No marshall present to move slow groups along. But could be short staffed due to COVID.
Great Valley course!
Perfect course to mix up with the more expensive courses in Tahoe... for $60 we played in the afternoon and other than the 4th hole which you can tell they are working on it... is a great course!
Great Layout
I would have given this course 5 stars, but can’t because of the course condition.
This is a fun, challenging course.
The Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes
One of my favorite courses. I have played it the last three years on my trips to Lake Tahoe.
The course is in great shape. The greens are a little fast and the staff is one of the best in the business.
Got stuck behind a couple of folks that weren’t that fast but jumped ahead at the turn.
I had one of my best rounds at The Ranch this year and will definitely be headed back.
Seriously, go play this challenging but very fun course.
Need to Update Various Things
The flag sticks have no reflectors that make it very difficult if not impossible to get even a semi-accurate yards reading using a laser range finder. Also at check-in they need to inform you if the range is soon going to be closing. We had to wait about an hour for a golf cart. The course needed extensive watering on the front 9.
Great
Fantastic course. Very tough and humbling. Only issue I had was no yardage markers in the fairways.
