Deceptively challenging
This Donald Ross designed course challenges the player with holes protected by thick Bermuda roughs that punish the player that strays from the fairways. Many of the holes are guarded by deep bunkers and water that challenge the short game. The greens were beautiful and tested the players skills with angles and slopes that require good green reading ability.
This course is maintained impeccably......
Look forward to playing again....
another Ross gem
Great course. Very fair but challenging. Course was in pristine shape. Easily walkable
BJOKC
Very nice course. Played 6 holes in the rain. Layout was good. Would definitely play again when in the area.
Unplayable
Greens are sanded and unplayable. Booking through Golf Now seemed to upset the pro. Bad attitude.
Wilmington Island Club
Found the course to be fairly open, so there were few opportunities for a slicing duffer to lose balls in tight fairways. Several of the greens were a bit beat up, but they still played pretty well. Overall, this was an enjoyable course to play and I plan on going back when the schedule allows me the time.
Greens were in bad shape.
Course has a nice layout with some easy and some challenging holes. It was disappointing that is was not in good shape. Several greens were partially gone and under repair.
Wind is a factor
Great course when you can get a deal on it. The greens have been in better shape, but no doubt they will get them back in shape as soon as possible. The driving range should be limited to irons when the tees are forward to avoid interfering with players teeing off on #2.
Decent Value; Course in Rough Shape
We saw the course as a hot deal for $35 and booked the earliest we could. Pace of play was great, as there was no one in front of us. We had my 9 year old daughter out for the first time and only had one group run into us. So as a first time experience on a full course, it was nice.
The course itself was in really rough shape. Most of the greens were patchy, as were many of the tee boxes. Bunkers were probably in the best shape of all the conditions.
We were allowed free range time when we arrived, so that was a plus.
Bag man was the best part. Super friendly, big smile, great laugh. It was a great way to start the morning. Guy behind the desk wasn't rude, but wasn't friendly either.
All in all, for the price we paid and the company that was kept, it was a good experience. However, I probably wouldn't go back for a full round, since one reason I came from the north was for good golf.
very windy handicap : 0-4
It was a very windy day. The course was in very good shape for this time of year. It is a very challenging course when the wind is blowing 20 mph and its your first time around. I suggest buying one of the yardage books in the pro shop. Very good Donald Ross design. Lots of bunkers in play. Overall the course is medium width tee to green with smallish greens that are well protected by water and/or bunkers. The greens seem to have about 3 sand traps guarding each one. There are two holes that come to mind that you have to lay up off the tee to avoid driving into a hidden pond. Number 5 and number 10 I believe. Staff was excellent. The practice green was having some work done, but the chipping green was so good it was just like the greens on the course. I will return and play again before I leave town. I suggest you play it forward. Course plays tough. Winter time golf !!!
Cant wait fir the grass to grow
Great course at any price. they do have reasonable membership rate sit you live in the area. One on the best Ive played since I moved from CT.
Wilmington island is top in savannah
I played here on vacation and it was ranked number 17 for courses in Georgia. When I played here the fox was so good as well as the great staff. The practice green was great as well as a white ranked bunker. The course was great with water and white sand in the bunkers. The greens where very fast and where awesome. I loved the green fairways and the rough that would gobble up the ball. I loved the trees that where healthy and growing well. I loved the clubhouse and the carts where very nice. Overall this was a very fun course.
Savannah Ross Rose
I'd say this course is a rose without thorns. No, I take that back. I got pricked several times by Mr. Ross' strategic placement of water, bunkers, mounds and doglegs, to create optical and physical forced layups. This results in taking a short, flat course and turning it into one that forces you to hit other than driver off the tee and then long irons into greens. A course you want to play again once you've seen it's "thorns". If you're a fan of the classic designers, take advantage of playing this private course that is open to outsiders. Playing in winter, we did not get the full experience of thick lush rough or fully growing greens, but the dormant Bermuda was still tricky for us northerners, and the "painted" greens rolled fast and true.
Lack hospitality almost rude
Played course a few times & everytime very nonchalant attitude. Cart gentlemen were first class. Crosswinds would great value for your money. Staff Can use a lesson on true hospitality.
Very nice course!
This was my first time playing this course. We purchased a hot deal on golf now which was reasonable. I would not pay full rates to play this course but it is the best course close to wilmington island and down town savannah. I will definitely play this course again.
Average course
Everything was fine about this course, not great, not bad. It was very average. We came over from HHI to play. It was on par with the average level courses of HHI. It you are local to the area, it is worth playing.
Food in the grill was excellent!
great course
my son and i really enjoyed our round..
course was in great shape excepy where they had had a lot of rain.
would recommend to anybody.
Great Course - Lot of Distractions
First impressions: Cart guy/starter was extremely nice and friendly. Food shack lady also very friendly and food very good. They both get 5 stars. Gentleman (Australian accent perhaps) behind the pro shop counter just the opposite. Seemed a bit testy and cold, no smiles, no welcome to the club, all business and minimal customer service skills. Seemed somewhat agitated. Give him 2 stars.
About the course: Driving range off mats with worn out balls so 4 stars for condition of overall facility. Course itself was muddy in spots but overall very, very nice. Don't agree with reviewers that its the best in Savannah but certainly in the top 5. Nice layout and excellent greens.Played on a Wednesday afternoon and evidently this day is prime day to get the course ready for the weekend, maintenance vehicles going everywhere with very little courtesy given to the players on the course. I understand the golf business is a tough business right now and time is money but if you see a player about to hit or putt at least pretend to have the courtesy to pause before darting across the fairway behind or in front of him or her. This happened on a number of occasions. On the flip side it was refreshing to see a golf course receive that much TLC and it showed, very nice tract with challenging greens.
Overall loved it and would return, just not on a Wednesday and hopefully when the pro shop guy is having a better day.
Excellent condition
Nice to play the day after a major tournament. The course was perfectly groomed and a delight to play. One of, if not the best course in the Savannah area. If you get the opportunity, you should seize it.
